The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) is a popular dog breed that is large and strong. He was originally bred for herding sheep. The breed weighs between 65 and 100 lbs. The height for males is 24 - 26 inches, for females 22 - 24 inches. The German Shepherd is in the AKC Herding Group.
The German Shepherd was bred for herding of sheep. Throughout they years, the work ethic of this breed has been honed so that tracking, obedience and protection have been actively highlighted in the selecting breeding of this dog. They are most suited to active working environments, They can be found doing police work, guarding, therapy, search and rescue, military and as guide dogs. After the first world war the name was changed (in UK and France) to Alsatian to remove the stigma attached, and it has only been in recent times that the original name has been officially recognized again.
