Asian Lions Profile, Asian Lions Information and Asian Lion Fast Facts

Nearly all wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, but one small population of Asian lions exists in India's Gir Forest. Asian lions and African lions are subspecies of the same species.

Asian lions once prowled from the Middle East to India. Now, only 200 to 260 of these magnificent animals survive in the wild. The Gir Forest's dry teak woods were once a royal hunting ground. Today they are a reserve where the endangered Asian lions are heavily protected. An additional 200 Asian lions live in zoos.

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males eventually leave and may establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male.

Only male lions boast manes, the impressive fringe of long hair that encircles their heads. Males defend the pride's territory. They mark the area with urine, roar menacingly to warn intruders, and chase off animals that encroach on their turf.

Female lions are the pride's primary hunters. They often work together to prey upon large mammals.

After the hunt, the group effort often degenerates to squabbling over the sharing of the kill, with cubs at the bottom of the pecking order. Young lions do not help the pride hunt until they are about a year old. Lions will hunt alone if the opportunity presents itself, and they also steal kills from hyenas or wild dogs.

The word ‘zoo’ is derived from the biological discipline zoology and is a shortened form of zoological garden or park. Zoos have been around since the Middle Ages but have changed radically since those days and are still constantly improving. Many zoos now attempt to replicate natural habitats within the enclosures, benefiting both animals and visitors. Particularly popular with small children are petting zoos, often integrated into larger zoos and with a combination of domestic and docile wild animals which may be stroked and fed. Zoos also cause controversy, with many animal rights activists totally against them. Some animal welfare groups recognize the educational value but seek to remedy the poor conditions which unfortunately still exist in some zoos. Animals rocking, swaying or pacing may indicate that they are distressed. The first zoo open to the public was the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes, founded in Paris in 1794.

Cheetah Sprinting After Prey - Wallpaper

Reaching speeds up to 60 miles (96 kilometers) per hour, cheetahs are the fastest land animal. However, running at this speed requires a lot of energy, and the cheetah cannot keep up a sprint for long.

"For a [female] cheetah the real danger is not losing a kill but losing her cubs. Ninety-five percent of cheetah cubs die before reaching independence. Hyenas kill them out of hunger, lions apparently out of bad habit. ... Female cheetahs deal with the threat by constantly moving, preferably before their rivals even know they're around. They coexist as phantom species, slipping into temporary vacancies between prides of lions and packs of hyenas."

Unlike most African predators, cheetahs hunt during the daytime. When they spot prey, they can accelerate faster than most cars: from 0 to 60 miles (96 kilometers) an hour in only three seconds.

Cheetah mothers typically give birth to a litter of three cubs, all of which will stay with her for one and a half to two years before venturing off on their own. When interacting with her cubs, cheetah mothers purr, just like domestic cats.

Sharp eyesight and raw speed (faster than any other land mammal) make the cheetah a formidable hunter.

> About African Cheetahs - The cheetah is an amazing African animal. It is a popular and well known animal by many, due to its characteristics. They are found mostly in Saharan Africa, south of the Sahara desert. They hunt in packs, and usually dominate a territory of about 35 square kilometres.

It gets its name from a Hindi word meaning "spotted animal". This amazing animal is covered in spots (apart from the throat and abdomen area). They have a small head, almost disproportionate to the size of their body. They weigh about 50 kilograms on average, with males weighing more and being slightly larger than females. They stand at about 80 centimetres tall, and about 1.3 metres long. Their tail measures in at about 75 centimetres.

Did you know?: Cheetahs often get confused with leopards. One way to distinguish is to check for the tear mark. Cheetahs have a tear mark on their face, while leopards do not. A tear mark is the black fur leading from the eyes down to the mouth.

Amazing Fact: The cheetah is the fastest land animal, they can bound at speeds of up to 113 km/h !

The cheetah is a carnivore, and therefore eats small animals. They have keen eyesight, and use this primarily when hunting. They stay almost camoflouged in grass, or climb a tree and scan for their prey. They then chase their prey at speeds of up to 80 km/h. If the animal is small, such as a hare, the cheetah will simply maul the hare to death, but if it is larger, the cheetah will go for the throat, and block the windpipe until the animal stops breathing.

Being cats, cheetahs can purr and growl. They can also bark and hiss, but they do not roar like a lion.

Amazing Fact: Cheetah's accelerate from 0-70 km/h in under 2 seconds.

Cheetah's have a gestation period of between 90 to 95 days with 2 to 4 cubs born. After 6 weeks, the cub leaves their den, and is strong enough to join hunts with the pack. When they are 6 months old, the mother is known to capture live prey and for the cub to practice its kill technique. The cub continues to live with mother for a further year learning hunting skills and survival techniques.

The goliath frog PhotoThe goliath frog Photo

Did you know that the world's biggest frog is found in Cameroon? Named the goliath frog, their body can be one-foot long.

The goliath frog, Conraua goliath is the largest extant anuran on Earth. It can grow up to 13 inches (33 cm) in length from snout to vent, and weighs up to 8 lb (3 kg). This animal has a relatively small habitat range, mainly in West Africa (near Gabon). Its numbers are dwindling due to habitat destruction, its collection for consumption as food and its collection for the pet trade.

The goliath frog can live up to 15 years.Goliath frogs eat largely crabs, but will also eat insects and smaller frogs. These frogs have acute hearing but no vocal sac, and additionally lack nuptial pads.

> Habitat -

The goliath frog is normally found in fast-flowing rivers with sandy bottoms in the West African countries of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. These rivers are usually clear and highly oxygenated. Their actual range spans from the last 125 miles (200 km) of the Sanaga basin in Cameroon to the north to the last 30 miles (50 km) of the Benito River basin in Equatorial Guinea to the south. The river systems in which these frogs live are often found in dense, extremely humid areas with relatively high temperatures.

> Reproduction -

Like all amphibians the water is vital for their reproduction. The males will construct spawning and breeding areas alongside and within rivers by pushing rocks into semicircular patterns. Not much is known about the goliath frog's reproduction; however, some African scholars have started to do more research for medical reasons.

> Relations with Humans -

Goliath frogs were considered to be a source of food in some parts of west Africa. They were also highly exported to zoos and animal dealers to be sold as pets. Unfortunately, these frogs fail to thrive in captivity (and almost never reproduce there). Due to their classification as endangered, the Equatorial Guinean government has declared that no more than 300 goliaths may be exported out of the country per year. Some are captured and kept as pets.

African Leopard Pictures & Pics, African Leopard Photos and African Leopard Facts at Animals Zoo Park

> Physical description :
The African leopard varies in base color throughout Africa. Depending on the location and habitat, they can vary from reddish brown, through dark yellow to cream. African leopards are covered in black rosettes, usually without spots within them, the pattern of rosettes being unique to each individual. Male leopards are larger and heavier than females.

> Diet and Hunting :

Leopards have a very varied diet which includes insects, rodents, reptiles, and even large mammals, and will occasionally take domestic livestock

Leopards are very stealthy and like to stalk close and run a relatively short distance after their prey. They kill through suffocation by grabbing their prey by the throat and biting down with their powerful jaws. They rarely fight other predators for their food because the risk of injury, which could prove fatal if it prevented hunting. Leopards can get some of their water from prey, but need to drink to survive.

> Behavior :
When a leopard stalks prey, it keeps a low profile and slinks through the grass or bush until it is close enough to launch an attack. When not hunting, it can move through herds of antelopes without unduly disturbing them by flipping its tail over its back to reveal the white underside, a sign that it is not seeking prey.

Leopards are basically solitary and go out of their way to avoid one another. Each animal has a home range that overlaps with its neighbors; the male's range is much larger and generally overlaps with those of several females. A leopard usually does not tolerate intrusion into its own range except to mate. Unexpected encounters between leopards can lead to fights.

Leopards growl and spit with a screaming roar of fury when angry and they purr when content. They announce their presence to other leopards with a rasping or sawing cough. They have a good sense of smell and mark their ranges with urine; they also leave claw marks on trees to warn other leopards to stay away.

Leopards continually move about their home ranges, seldom staying in an area for more than two or three days at a time. With marking and calling, they usually know one another's whereabouts. A male will accompany a female in estrus for a week or so before they part and return to solitude.

> Habitat :

African leopards inhabit a wide range of habitats within Africa

Leopards are most at risk in areas of semi-desert, where scarce resources often results in conflict with nomadic farmers and their livestock. Like most large mammals, they are generally absent in areas with a high population density of people.
